July 23-24: Ocean City will hold its second annual Tribute To the Phillipines July 23-24. The celebration will be centered at the City’s historic Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. It will include a Craft and Trades exhibition and Tourism Fair, an entertainment program featuring Filipino and American music and a Consular Out Reach Service. During the Consular Outreach Service, a team from the Philippine Consulate General in New York will be at the Pier to process the applications for passport, notarization and dual citizenship of Filipino nationals.

The Craft and Trades exhibition will be held in the Pavilion area of the Music Pier adjacent to the auditorium. It will feature displays of crafts including clothing, pottery, music, exotic lanterns, hand bags, photography plus foods and many other items. There will be special displays by the Philippine Department of Tourism, Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, City of Ocean City, Ocean City Board of Realtors and Western Union, major sponsors of the event.

Air Circus of Ocean City will present a Yo Yo, demonstrations during exhibit hours. The Yo Yo was invented in the Philippines and the word means “return-return” in the Filipino language. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sat., July 23 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sun., July 24.Admission is free and there will be giveaway items from exhibitors.

An opening ceremony is set for July 23 at 11 a.m. in front of the Music Pier including members of the Philippine Consulate, City officials and representatives of the Chamber Commerce and the business community.

On Sat. at 8 p.m., the Filipino-American Tribute Show will be held in the Music Pier Auditorium. It will be hosted by Rene P. Sese, Filipino American singing sensation,who will sing both Filipino and American standards.

Featured Band will be Tidal Wave, a popular group that specializes in Beach Boy and classic rock. Featured in the show will be teenage vocalist Nina Sophia Mojares who was selected out of 70,000 acts to perform as a semi-finalist on NBC’s, America’s Got Talent before celebrity judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandell. She was featured in FOX 5 Good Day New York’s musical presentation of Bye Bye Birdie, appeared on the Maury Povich Show and named Most Talented Kid and also appeared on GMA7-24 Oras and ABS-CBN Philippine Networks as the “most promising singing star in the U.S. Also featured are singer, Monica Castillo Meares, April Talangbayan, a flute playing dancer who has wowed audiences throughout the Delaware Valley and New York and Hula dancer Betty Harshaw. The championship Air Circus Yo Yo Team will open the show. Admission is $10.Tickets are available at the Music Pier Box Office, open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily or at the door. Children are free.

Two years ago, Ocean City formed a Sister City relationship with San Jose Occidental Mindoro of the Philippines and this has led to the Tribute to the Philippines that last year was visited by several thousands of Filipino Americans and their friends. Rene Sese, who lives in Ocean City and is a native of the Philippines, was instrumental in arranging the Sister City relationship.

July 24: The Ocean City Pops presents Maestro Scheible’s 25th Anniversary concert with the Pops. Performers include violinist Robyn Bollinger, acclaimed soprano Michelle Johnson, baritone Steven LaBrie and Lisa and Todd Thomas, 8 p.m. at Music Pier. WHAT'S HAPPENING

July 4th Weekend: A giant fireworks display, two colorful bike parades, a Broadway staged performance of Music Man and a Kite Flying Contest will highlight the City’s July 4th weekend events. The weekend kicks off on Sun., July 3 with the Ocean City Pops Orchestra and the Ocean City Theatre Company presenting the Music Man. The show is set for the Hughes Performing Arts Center, 6th and Atlantic Ave., on Sun., July 3 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be performances on July 5-6 at 7:30 p.m. plus a matinee on Wed., July 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Music Pier Box Office, 609-525-9248 or from www.ocnj.us.
Two Bike Parades are set for July 4th. The South Ocean City Parade begins at 40th and Asbury Ave. at 10 a.m. with registration starting at 9 a.m. The Garden Civic Assn. Bike Parade forms 10 a.m. at the Long Port Bridge. Registration is 9 a.m.
A Kite Flying Contest sponsored by Air Circus on the Boardwalk will begin at approximately 5 p.m. at the 9th St. Beach as bathers leave the area. At 9:30 p.m. a huge fireworks display will be fired from a barge off the Music Pier. Music will piped over the Boardwalk and through the downtown to accompany the display and can also be heard on WIBG FM -94.3 Radio.

July 3: The Philadelphia Organ Quartet concert at the Tabernacle, 5th and Wesley Ave., 7 p.m. Three additional Allen organs supplement the Tabernacle four manual Renaissance model. Admission free. Through July: The Ocean City Repertory Theater, 813 Asbury Ave., presents the magic of Chad Juros, July 2,9,16 and 30 at 11 am. plus a Sunday performance 11 a.m., July 17. July 10: The Ocean City Pops is back with a Tribute to Sousa featuring pianist Joseph Mohan. Hear this sensational young prodigy from the Julliard School perform Grieg and a patriotic tribute to Sousa plus Pops Favorites of the March King. July 16: Night In Venice Registration Information and Incentives: Registrations are now being taken for the Night in Venice decorated boat and bayfront home competition. The gala event is set for Sat., July 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. on the Bay. Optional theme is Broadway on the Bay. As in the past few years $50 cash cards will be given to all boat entries that finish parade to enhance decorations. Each boat captain will receive a special gift. All who enter boats and homes in the competition will be given a commemorative mug. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best decorated boats. All boat owners will receive photos of their boats in the parade.
