WHAT'S HAPPENING

July 4th Weekend: A giant fireworks display, two colorful bike parades, a Broadway staged performance of Music Man and a Kite Flying Contest will highlight the City’s July 4th weekend events. The weekend kicks off on Sun., July 3 with the Ocean City Pops Orchestra and the Ocean City Theatre Company presenting the Music Man. The show is set for the Hughes Performing Arts Center, 6th and Atlantic Ave., on Sun., July 3 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be performances on July 5-6 at 7:30 p.m. plus a matinee on Wed., July 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Music Pier Box Office, 609-525-9248 or from www.ocnj.us.
Two Bike Parades are set for July 4th. The South Ocean City Parade begins at 40th and Asbury Ave. at 10 a.m. with registration starting at 9 a.m. The Garden Civic Assn. Bike Parade forms 10 a.m. at the Long Port Bridge. Registration is 9 a.m.
A Kite Flying Contest sponsored by Air Circus on the Boardwalk will begin at approximately 5 p.m. at the 9th St. Beach as bathers leave the area. At 9:30 p.m. a huge fireworks display will be fired from a barge off the Music Pier. Music will piped over the Boardwalk and through the downtown to accompany the display and can also be heard on WIBG FM -94.3 Radio.

July 3: The Philadelphia Organ Quartet concert at the Tabernacle, 5th and Wesley Ave., 7 p.m. Three additional Allen organs supplement the Tabernacle four manual Renaissance model. Admission free. Featuring Rudy Lucente, Jr., St. Rose Catholic Church, North Wales, Pa., Peter Richard Conte, Wanamaker Grand Court Organist, Michael H. Stairs, Philadelphia Orchestra Organist and Colin B. July 6: PirateSchool, a show is a one man, seafaring vaudeville show that spoofs the golden age of sail and satisfies children’s curiosity about brawny buccaneers of yore. Show time is 10:30 a.m. at the Music Pier. Tickets are $8 and may be ordered at www.ocnj.us or from the Music Pier Box Office, 609-525-9248 or at the door.

July 6: The first Sand Sculpting Contest of the season will be held on Wed., July 6 starting 9 a.m. on the 6th St. Beach. There are categories for age groups 5 and under, 6-8, 9-12, teens, Individual Adults and Families. Entry is free. Prizes are awarded.

Through July: The Ocean City Repertory Theater, 813 Asbury Ave., presents the magic of Chad Juros, July 2,9,16 and 30 at 11 am. plus a Sunday performance 11 a.m., July 17. This young, nationally recognized magician has performed in Las Vegas, at venues throughout the country and Ocean City First Night. For information, call 609- 457-6686.

July 5-7: The Youth Opera Company of South Jersey presents Les Miserable 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Local talent 8 to 18 will be showcased. For information, call 609-576-2060.

July 7: Ocean City Historical Museum Free Thursday Lecture series present "Place Names of the Jersey Shore: Why did they name it that?" with Lee Ireland. Lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the Ocean City Free Public Library.

July 10: The Ocean City Pops is back with a Tribute to Sousa featuring pianist Joseph Mohan. Hear this sensational young prodigy from the Julliard School perform Grieg and a patriotic tribute to Sousa plus Pops Favorites of the March King. Plus Casey at the Bat and the Pops annual salute to veterans. Sponsored by Mack and Manco in memory of Ensign John Elliott. Concert starts 8 p.m. at Music Pier. Tickets are $15/10. July 10: The Kings Brass perform in concert at the Tabernacle, 5th and Wesley Ave., at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

July 13: The Ocean City Arts Center holds its Annual Luncheon, noon, Wed. July 13 at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point. Theme for this year’s luncheon is “Cirque de Arts” with entertainment by magician Chad Juros. Tickets are $42. For reservations, call 609-399-7628.

July 16: Night In Venice Registration Information and Incentives: Registrations are now being taken for the Night in Venice decorated boat and bayfront home competition. The gala event is set for Sat., July 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. on the Bay. Optional theme is Broadway on the Bay. As in the past few years $50 cash cards will be given to all boat entries that finish parade to enhance decorations. Each boat captain will receive a special gift. All who enter boats and homes in the competition will be given a commemorative mug. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best decorated boats. All boat owners will receive photos of their boats in the parade.
